Aziz Sancar’s Education Background
Sancar completed his primary and secondary education in Mardin. Later, he received his medical education at Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine. He then went to the United States and earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in the field of biochemistry.
Sancar is famous for his work in DNA repair and chronobiology. He researched the repair processes of damage caused to DNA by sunlight and other environmental factors. Thanks to these studies, Sancar won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2015.
In 1982, Sancar was elected to the American National Academy of Sciences for his work in DNA repair. He is also a member of many international scientific societies such as the Turkish Academy of Sciences, the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Japan Academy, and the European Molecular Biology Organization.
